don’t read just a part , read complete set of line then understand,
first its not dragging down , its not give extra help , sect leader is helping mc to with his personal bullshit because he believes in mc.

second he is not abandoning mc , he said the fight of public opinion can rises a situation where they have to either abandon mc or fight head on . Also sect leader is clear indicated his intention that he is ready to fight if necessary.
